Genetics plays an important and diverse role in the preservation of biological diversity. This course consists of two one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory each week and covers genetic theory and methods that are utilized in modern conservation efforts. Laboratory exercises focus on 1) the practical aspects of DNA extraction methods, molecular markers, PCR, sequencing, and capillary electrophoresis, and 2) analyzing the resulting genetic data.
