The focus of our long-term studies (1988-2002) on cooperatively breeding brown jays (Cyanocorax morio) in Monteverde, Costa Rica was to understand the determinants of cooperation and conflict within social groups. Using samples we collected from our original study, we have quantified fine-scale genetic structure, sex-specific dispersal, and pairwise relatedness across the population to test predictions from our field studies.
